Uginus Smalskys of the Lithuanian "Kartu lengviau" brain tumour support community advises that they have scheduled several activities joining the 3rd International Brain Tumour Awareness Week.  Tentatively on Friday November 5th they plan:

The early morning infotainment broadcast “Good Morning” on National TV. The info reportage about "Kartu lengviau" and its objectives and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week. The Mini Conference will be held in Vilnius Emergency University Hospital.  Presentations to be delivered: The history and activity of "Kartu lengviau". The participation in IBTA activity. The presentation of "The book for the patient“. The book to be published in November 2009. It will cover a lot of important issues (treatment modes, psychological aspects, advice of convalescents, etc.) for patients and their relatives. The disease of brain tumour. The information prepared on the basis of patients’ questions posed in the web site www.kartulengviau.lt. Comments of the neurosurgeon. The story of one patient. The latest treatment modes. On the evening of October 28th, at 5.30 pm Lithuanian time, before the beginning of the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week, there will be a Holy Mass for brain tumour patients at the Vilnius Arkikatedra Bazilika.

There will be a march (walking) from the Hospital to the nearby café; Informal discussion, coffee and snacks.

They have also produced their own special logo banner for the occasion:


ARTC Paris advises that they are organising a brain tumour awareness-raising 10 kms walk on 4 October.

On 17 October 9 YO Harry Moseley (UK) and his "Help Harry" organisation is holding the First Helpharryhelpothers sponsored walk for brain tumours. See this website for a very interesting story about the background. This is a link to his poster for the event.

Bernard Nardini of France advises that a walk will be held on 1 November as part of the Awareness Week and World Walk in honour of his wife Agnes, who has a brain tumour. Here is his poster for the event:




John Carey from the Brain Tumour Group, Western Australia, advises that they wll be holding a picnic at Synergy Parkland in Kings Park, Perth, on 1 November as part of the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week. The Adult Brain Cancer Support Association of South Australia will also be holding a picnic for the Awareness Week on the same day at 12.30 p.m. at Hazlewood Park in Adelaide.

Dr Marta Penas-Prado from  the Servicio de Neurologia at the Hospital Universitario Doce de Octubre in Madrid, Spain advises: "I am pleased to announce to you that I am planning to organize a meeting and lecture for family members of patients with brain tumors on Thursday 5th November, during the Brain Tumour Awareness Week.  The title will be 'Symptom management in patients with brain tumors'. "  In Spanish the equivalent title is "Manejo de sintomas en pacientes con tumores cerebrales".   The meeting will cover practical things such as what to do when a brain tumour patient has a seizure and will also help family members better understand brain tumour symptoms. The 4th Annual Have a Chance Walk to Fight Brain Tumors will take place in  Battery Park, New York on 18 October. Proceeds will help Have a Chance and the (US) National Brain Tumor Society. The mileage covered will go towards the World Walk target.


Staff at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (Australia), under the leadership of neurosurgeon Dr Kate Drummond,  will organise a series of lunchtime lectures during the Awareness Week and a forum for the public on the Saturday.


Ana Maria Bosque Garcia from Barcleona (Spain) writes: “Sant Joan de Deu Hospital in Barcelona, and other non-profit organization of Catalonia (Spain) created to provide support services for the families of children afflicted with a brain tumour, will organise an activity on 6th November, 2009, to contribute to increased awareness about brain tumours in children, supporting  the Awareness Week. These event is an information point, at the hospital main entrance, with the distribution of IBTA leaflets (in Spanish) and another organization’s leaflets which draws attention to the particular challenges of a brain tumour in children and the need for a special response and an increased research effort.” See: http://www.hsjdbcn.org/


Amber Bender writes from the USA: "My husband and I started Addi's Faith Foundation after our almost 2 year old daughter passed away from a brain tumor.  We raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research and for families who are struggling to care for a child with cancer.  We are having Addison Faith Bender's Inaugural Walk By Faith 5k Race/Walk on Sunday, November 8th.  So far we have over 250 people registered and we expect to double that." Michelle Murray from the Sydney-based Cure for Life Foundation advises that they will be holding a Walk 4 Life at Sydney's Centennial Park on Sunday 1 November, the commencement day for the Awareness Week. There is an opportunity to sponsor well-known neurosurgeon and CFL identity Dr Charlie Teo in the Walk at this website.


Klaske Faaij-Hofstee, Chairman Stichting STOPhersentumoren.nl (Het fonds voor primaire hersentumoren onderzoek) advises: “This year in the Netherlands we will organize the Walk4Brains. Because of the International Brain Tumor Awareness Week, we walk on Saturday 7th November with approximately 600 walkers to raise more awareness and money for brain tumors. Brain tumor patient Nico Faaij will organize a Walk4Brain in Driebergen, brain tumor patient Jacquelien Veldhuis in Dwingeloo, and Natasja Kroeseklaas, who lost her 2 year old daughter due to brain tumors, will organize a Walk4Brains in Deventer and Amersfoort.  Last year participating teams raised over 10.000 which goes directly to brain tumor research. We hope for this year on a bigger result! We organize also the event kickbike against cancer. For raising more money for brain tumor research. For this event we ask people to climb a high mountain called Alpe d’Huez in France with a kickbike. My husband Nico, self patient, is so enthusiastic that he can persuade / motivate others do to also, and for next year we already have a team of 50 people to join. Michel Esnault (France) Chairman of GFME reports: “GFME will participate like every year for France in the walk around the World for the cerebral tumors in the week of sensitization of the 1st to November 7. GFME organized a walk in The Palmyre (17) Sunday October 10 uniting 84 participants of 3 to 79 years, 54 people for 6 km have foot and 30 people for 15 km in bicycle is 774 km browsed to end under the beautiful sunbeams by a picnic on the beach of Good Shackle.

A second walk, the walk of Agnes will take place in Paris, departure owing the entry of the Bastille opera, direction Carries Golden, the green stream, 6 kilometers on foot Sunday November 1st to 14h30.

This year has seen the emergence in several countries of multiple walks, which is a good development.

Charles and Olga from the The Andrew McCartney Trust Fund advise: “Our team will be supporting the Awareness Week at the CO-OP Supermarket Tywyn North Wales with a two day bag packing event on 30th Oct & 31st Oct.our collection buckets will be at the ready at the end of each checkout.” They also report that two more days bagpacking will now take place at COOP Suermarket Dolgellau North Wales on 6th/7th November.
The variety of awareness-raising and fund-raising initiatives is truly amazing.

Seattle event: International Brain Tumor Awareness Week is November 1-7, 2009. Come and enjoy lunch, hear lectures and a panel discussion along with networking with other brain tumor survivors. Event Details: Monday, November 2nd from 1-4pm Location: Gildas Club Seattle  1400 Broadway Seattle, WA 98122. Please join us for an event to promote awareness and discuss advances in the treatment of brain tumors. Speakers will include: Dr. John Henson with the Ivy Center at Swedish Neurocience Institute, Dr. Maciej Mrugala with the University of Washington Medical Center and Dellann Elliott, CEO of The Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Research.





Notes: The intention of the founding meeting was that we seek to represent all tumours of the central nervous system. As is the practice in the scientific literature and clinical use, we use the words "brain tumour", not "brain cancer".
