The Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours will be held between 1 January and 7 November 2009. People are encouraged to undertake sponsored or unsponsored walks to raise awareness about brain tumours and to donate the mileage covered to the World Walk target of circling the earth five times at the Equator (125,000 miles or 200,000 kms).

The IBTA does not wish to receive any funds raised by these walks or by other brain tumour awareness-raising activities. Funds raised should be donated to a local or national brain tumour support or research activity.

The 3rd International Brain Tumour Awareness Week will be held between Sunday 1 November - Saturday 7 November, 2009 and people are encouraged to organise an activity which will contribute to increased awareness about brain tumours. It could be a walk, a picnic, an information seminar, a scientific conference, or even the distribution of a media statement to local media which draws attention to the particular challenges of a brain tumour and the need for a special response and an increased research effort.

Supporting organisations in 2009 could focus on the forthcoming 125th anniversary (on 25 November) of the first documented, modern-day surgery for a glioma, which has been reported in the booklet jointly authored by Kathy Oliver and Denis Strangman and which is available from the IBTA homepage.

Organisations wishing to be listed as supporters of the IBTA's 2009 World Walk  (1 January 2009- 7 November 2009) and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (1 November 2009 - 7 November 2009) should contact chair@theibta.org or kathy@theibta.org

Notes: The intention of the founding meeting was that we seek to represent all tumours of the central nervous system. As is the practice in the scientific literature and clinical use, we use the words "brain tumour", not "brain cancer".
