2010 Completed Events - Part 1

Please let us know the details of your event/s as soon as possible so we can include them on this webpage and help you spread the word about them.  We want to make the 2010 Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week the best yet!

Organisations wishing to be listed as supporters of the IBTA's 2009 World Walk  (1 January 2010 - 6 November 2010) and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (31 October 2010 - 6 November 2010) should contact chair@theibta.org or kathy@theibta.org

Please note: for your organisation or group to be a "supporter" of the Week and Walk, the IBTA requires no financial commitment or fee to be paid to us by you.  All we are asking for is your enthusiasm in supporting and promoting these events and for allowing us to add your name to our list of supporters.

Val and Vicky Ringer of Levi's Star in the UK report that walkers achieved 250 miles on the 2010 Levi's Star sponsored walk around New Miller Dam in Wakefield, Yorkshire.  They wrote: "It rained all day, but about 80 turned up to support Levi's Star and more importantly to remember Levi.  The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon - splashing in puddles and walking through the mud - afraid the ducks went under cover!  The pub at the end was a welcome sight and somewhere to dry off.  We send you 250 miles for the Walk Around the World."

Kim Doron reports that 12 walkers each walked 5 kms as part of the Tali's Fund component within Meagan's Walk.

Sue Evans from the Ed Evans Foundation advises that "We had a very successful walk on Easter Monday.185 people 'walked the Vale' a total of 1520 miles walked and raising 1500 GBP for Brain Tumour. The weather was kind to us and the rain stayed away although it was very wet under foot. Everyone had a very enjoyable day, I stopped many people during the day to ask them why they had chosen to walk with us and it was quite amazing the amount of people who were walking in memory of someone who had died of a brain tumour or they have friends or family with a brain tumour. I hope that we have helped to make people more aware of the need for brain tumour research."
Ron Brinton from the Duke University "Angels Among Us" 5k event advises that a message from the IBTA was read to the participants in its awareness and fund-raising event, which included 256 teams for an estimated 5,000 participants, who collectively raised around $1,630,000. That is a tremendous effort.

Meghan Kimball reports that the 7th Annual Glio-Blastoff 5kms event held on 8 May went well: “We had a total of 454 participants, 224 of which were walkers. They walked a total of 694.4miles collectively (1120 Kilometers). We wanted to be sure you have that information to add to the goal this year for the 2010 Walk Around The World. Also, I wanted to thank you for sending me the letter to read to my participants before we started the race this year.  It is good for them to hear and it helps heighten awareness.  Our event raised $27,000 for research and family support services and continues to grow every year!”

Giovanni Camporeale reports that Il Fondo di Gio organised a scientific conference on 15 May with the title “IT IS NOT TRUE THAT “HOPE DIES LAST”: HOPE NEVER DIES. A meeting with Doctors and Researchers", at Sala Imperatore, Savoia Excelsior Palace, Trieste, Italy. Giovanni said that the President of Il Fondo di Gio Francesca Scropetta was "formidable".

Andrea Passarella from Matthew's Miles advises that they "
had 92 people walk 2 miles. A local high school had 27 students have their own walk - where they walked 2 miles. So, that's a total of 119 people x 2 miles = 238 miles".

Sheryl Cash from the American Brain Tumor Association writes:

"A record 6,000 walkers, runners, volunteers and supporters ages 1 to 94, from 34 states and as far away as Hawaii, England and Norway converged on Chicago's Lakefront on Saturday, May 22, 2010 for the American Brain Tumor Associations (ABTA) 5th Annual Path to Progress Run/Walk. Event organizers estimate that the event will raise close to $1 million also a record for ABTAs research and patient-family education and support programs. The Path to Progress has steadily grown since the first event in 2004. The 2010 Path to Progress, with nearly 6,000 participants and more than 300 teams, was the largest to date. While significant progress has been made in treatment and care, a brain tumor continues to be a devastating diagnosis, said ABTA Executive Director Elizabeth Wilson. Through events like the Path to Progress 5K Run/Walk, ABTA ensures continued funding for critical brain tumor research, as well as desperately needed resources and support for patients and families living with this disease." Some of the participants are shown below.

Andrina Scwartz, events manager from the US National Brain Tumor Society adsvises that the walkers in three recent events (Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk, Race for Hope in DC, and the Denver Brain Tumor Walk), contributed a massive 56,740 kms to the World Walk target. What a magnificient effort! Here are some photos of the Bay Area walk (left) and the Denver walk (right).

Kim Lachut from the Sharing Hope walk advises that their walkers covered 300 miles and raised $15,000 for the ABTA.

Val Chesterton from the ACT Race & Fitness Walking Club in Australia reports that 27 walkers took part in the 5 kms Peter Waddell Memorial Walk held on the eve of the annual Lake Burley Griffin racewalking carnival.

Tim Erickson, secretary of the Victorian (Australia) Racewalking Club, advises that 74 walkers covered 409 kms and raised $600 in race fees and from sales in the Club canteen on 24 July for Brain Tumour Alliance Australia and BrainLInk. Here are some photos from the day. You can also watch a video on You Tube of the walkers in action at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yexi7QPj_gA

The senior racewalkers start their race.

Now for the Under 9 racewalkers.

Notes: The intention of the founding meeting was that we seek to represent all tumours of the central nervous system. As is the practice in the scientific literature and clinical use, we use the words "brain tumour", not "brain cancer".
