2010 Proposed Events

Please let us know the details of your event/s as soon as possible so we can include them on this webpage and help you spread the word about them.  We want to make the 2010 Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week the best yet!

Organisations wishing to be listed as supporters of the IBTA's 2010 World Walk  (1 January 2010- 6 November 2010) and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (31 October 2010 - 6 November 2010) should contact chair@theibta.org or kathy@theibta.org

Please note: for your organisation or group to be a "supporter" of the Week and Walk, the IBTA requires no financial commitment or fee to be paid to us by you.  All we are asking for is your enthusiasm in supporting and promoting these events and for allowing us to add your name to our list of supporters.

In one of the first pledges for 2010 (see the pledge webpage here) Rachel Leonard has pledged 13 miles on 17 April from walking 'Shine Manchester 2010' for Cancer Research UK "with all funds raised from my walk going towards their work on Brain Cancer". Good luck!

Kristen Gillette of The Kortney Rose Foundation writes: "We donated $85,000 to pediatric brain tumor research in 2009 bringing our 3 year total to $260,000. In 2009 we were able to get a much larger audience for our efforts when we were chosen as one of the official "participating" charities of the ING New York City Marathon. This is the largest and most respected marathon in the US, if not the world. Runners from all over the world come to participate. We will be a part of the 2010 event and hope to gain some more awareness about our foundation and all of our missions. This year we are will be involved in the New Jersey Marathon and hope to expand this over our team of 30 runners last year. We will be holding our 5th Kortney's Challenge 2 mile fun run/walk on Sunday August, 29, 2010 and that will be the event that you may use for mileage in the walk around the world for brain tumors. We are happy to help!"

Laurie Dangler from the ROC On! (Run Over Cancer) group writes: "This year we are planning to participate in more cities and more races, as well as to have our own 5K race to raise money for the ROC on! team." They will be participating in the Columbus, Ohio Marathon/Half Marathon, October 17, 2010 and there will be a ROC on! 5K Run/Walk/Crawl, December 4, 2010
Cindy Villarreal, President of the Nick Gonzales Foundation for Brain Tumor Research writes: "In two years, we have funded research grants totalling $78,500 US dollars and after our May 7th charity golf tournament, we hope to fund another $30-35,000. We will be having the 3rd Annual Nick Gonzales Charity Golf Tournament on May 7th here in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and will be participating in the 5th Annual  National Brain Tumor Society Walk in Ft. Worth on November 6th. This past November, we had 1600 walkers and raised over $280,000!"

Elizabeth Cairo advises that Fitzy's 5k run/walk in honor and memory of Lauren Fitzgerald, forever 20, will take place on 31 December and they hope to raise $10,000.

Charles and Olga Grant from the Andrew McCartney Trust Fund for Brain Tumour Research advise that “we shall of course be supporting the IBTA Walk Around the World 2010. We have recently confirmed Saturday 5th June for our sponsored walk and it will again be at our regular venue Lake Vyrnwy Powis.”

Yuko Moue from the Japan Pediatric Brain Tumour Network writes that the group plans to make a visit with Dr Sawamura to the Japanese Alps area of Nagano in August and anticipates being able to contribute many more kilometres to the IBTA's World Walk target.

Val and Vicky from Levi's Star advise that "we do the walk in March in memory of Levi as his birthday is 16 March.  But at our walk we promote the "Walk Around The World for Brain Tumours" and explain to everyone that our mileage goes towards this."

SSBTR walkers 2009

Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research (SSBTR) was founded in 2002, shortly after three students from the Paradise Valley Unified School District in the United States died from brain tumours.  Students, teachers, families and others were galvanised into action and established annual Walk-A-Thons which raise awareness of brain tumours and crucially raise desperately-needed funds for more research.  This year, two massive walks are taking place - one in Tucson, Arizona (US) on 20th February and the other in Phoenix, Arizona on 27th February. To date, the SSBTR Walk-A-Thons have raised over US $1 million through the efforts of thousands of determined walkers. The IBTA is proud to receive the walking mileage from SSBTR for its Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours, and is very grateful for their support.  For further information about the SSBTR 2010 Walk-A-Thons, please click here.

Friends of the late Alistair Rainback, who died from a brain tumour in 2008, have planned a journey from the east coast to the west coast on the island of Greenland in his memory. Funds raised will go to the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted, Herts, UK, where Alistair spent his last days. On line donations can be made here. The team has already raised over 100,000 GBP and have kindly agreed to donate the walking distance covered to the IBTA's World Walk target. We wish them well.

In the beautiful setting of Holkham Hall near Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, the Astro Fund (UK) will host walks of 1, 3, 6 and 10 miles on 10/10/10 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The walks will be well signposted and cars tour the routes to pick up any tired walkers. Dogs on leads are welcome and there will be games for the children along the 1 mile route, which is on the estate roads so pushchairs and wheel chairs are welcome too. All brain tumour charities are welcome to raise money for themselves and an entry fee of 5.00 will be charged for adults, children free. Last year, 1210 miles were walked for the IBTA's Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours initiative and Astro Fund raised well over 8,000with other brain tumour charities also benefitting from sponsorship.

Professor Ali Choucair from Utah advises that they are in the process of organising their First Brain Tumor Walk, which is tentatively scheduled for 9 October.

Dr Prakash Chitalkar of Batra Hospital New Delhi, India, advises that they will organise a walk during the Awareness Week.

Kim Lachut advises that they will again be holding the Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk Sharing Hope walk at UConn Alumni Center on the campus at Storrs on 26 June. The miles covered will go towards the World Walk target.

The United Brain Tumour Support Group (Gold Coast, Australia) advises they will hold the Dianne Moore Memorial Walk from the Burleigh Heads Surd Club, commencing at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday 18 July.

The UK-based Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust has got into the spirit of things with an enthusiastic promotion on its website of the fund raising and awareness raising potential of the walk concept. They have a webpage devoted to walk ideas and planning tips.

The UK organisation Brainstrust is holding its second “Big Wight Matter” on 24-26 September and is set to be THE family walking festival on the Isle of Wight. The organisation states “The weekend festival is a time for you to enjoy with your family the breathtaking coastal views and beaches of West Wight, with a 15 mile walk and a shorter walk for little legs. Come Saturday evening, you can dip tired toes into the pool at Brighstone, or revel into the night with a hog roast, games, beer tent and live music as the sun sets over the cliff tops.” The walking distances achieved will be donated to the IBTA’s World Walk target. The hog roast sounds inviting. Funds raised will be donated to Brainstrust and Brain Tumour Research.

Tracey Kristiansen advises that the Train for the Brain Fun Run/Walk will be held in Canberra (Australia) on 6 November. You can register and donate at this website.

Annette Mckeon of Aimee's Army has advised that the Aimee Dickey Childhood Cancer Walk/Fun Day will take place on Saturday, September 18th at Nay Aug Park, Scranton, Pennsylvania (USA) between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.  The walk mileage achieved during the "Aimee Dickey Walk" will be donated to the Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours.  Aimee was diagnosed with a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) brain tumour when she was 11 years old and sadly passed away from this dreadful disease at aged 12.  It was Aimee's dream to help raise awareness and funding for DIPG and other childhood cancers.  For further information about this event, please contact annette@aimeesarmy.com

Natalya Jagger from BT Buddies (UK) has some very exciting events happening over the coming months in the hope that their supporters will help them walk 5,581 miles – the distance around the coast of England – by the end of the 2010 Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours (a project of the International Brain Tumour Alliance). BT Buddies have also gained the support of various clubs in the nPower Championship,  and the Football Supporters Association, who will all come together at 6 different matches. Events at these matches include a players pitch walk and club supporters being asked to walk to and from the match and donate the distance walked to BT Buddies walk total and the IBTA’s Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours total!  Here is a photo of former UK MP Charles Clarke on the treadmill.

Notes: The intention of the founding meeting was that we seek to represent all tumours of the central nervous system. As is the practice in the scientific literature and clinical use, we use the words "brain tumour", not "brain cancer".
