2010 Proposed Events - Part 2

Please let us know the details of your event/s as soon as possible so we can include them on this webpage and help you spread the word about them.  We want to make the 2010 Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week the best yet!

Organisations wishing to be listed as supporters of the IBTA's 2010 World Walk  (1 January 2010- 6 November 2010) and the International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (31 October 2010 - 6 November 2010) should contact chair@theibta.org or kathy@theibta.org

Please note: for your organisation or group to be a "supporter" of the Week and Walk, the IBTA requires no financial commitment or fee to be paid to us by you.  All we are asking for is your enthusiasm in supporting and promoting these events and for allowing us to add your name to our list of supporters.

Dr Daljit Singh Secretary of the Neurological Association in New Delhi has an enthusiastic program in mind for the Awareness Week:

Kevin Sciuk advises that the Celebration of Hope fund-raising walk, organised by the brain tumor support group  B.R.A.I.N. in Richmond, Virginia, will be held on 10/10/10. Kevin's wife Marguerite passed away in September 2009 and they did not therefore organise a walk in 2009, so this year's event is doubly important. The mileage from the walk will go towards the IBTA's World Walk target. Here is the cover of the brochure they have produced:

Dr Danny T.M. Chan, Associate Director of the CUHK Brain Tumour Centre anticipates that their "Brain Trek" on 27 November will attract 300 walkers for the 3.5 kms event, to be held at The Peak. Enquiries to primachan@surgery.cuhk.edu.hk  Here is the cover of an attractive brochure the organisers have produced:

Mr George Plym, from the Western North Carolina Brain Tumor Support Group advises that they have arranged a talk by Dr Harold Pikus for its October meeting as part of the Awareness Week. Dr Pikus is a neurosurgeon practising at Mission/St Joe's in Ashville, North Carolina.
Dr Pikus

Brizbrain&Spine in Queensland, Australia, will be conducting their second "Walk for BT Research", Sunday, October 31. Last Year was the inaugural event to establish The Brizbrain Foundation for Brain Tumor Research, where the signature Orange-shirt supporters walked the 4km event around New Farm Park, Brisbane. This Year, the event will walk the same 4km, then join several of their Neurosurgeon colleagues and BBS staff for a BBQ breakfast.  Registration is from 7.30am, with start of walk at 10am. There were over 90 participants last year, with more expected to walk this Year. Contact Kate McBain, 07.3833 2500 for tickets.
The Joe Di Palma Brain Tumor and Pediatrics Foundation (Ontario, Canada), established in 2007, is planning its third annual gala on Friday November 5th 2010, at the Venetian Banquet Centre in Vaughan, Ontario Canada.  The guest list includes over 500 people with many prominent Torontonians attending, including Nancy Pencer and family (after which the Pencer Brain Tumor Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto is named). Joe Di Palma passed away from a brain tumor in November 2006, mere days away from his 36th Birthday. Peter Bordignon from the Foundation writes: "Proceeds from our past two galas were in excess of $110,000.00. Proceeds this year will once again go toward treatment, research and support of brain tumor patients and their families at The Pencer Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. The Pencer Centre is a multi-disciplinary facility that seeks to treat the whole patient, not just the brain tumor. This revolutionary approach to patient care has brought worldwide attention to The Pencer Brain Tumor Centre and made Princess Margaret Hospital a leading facility for clinical brain tumor research in North America."
Andrew McKerracher advises that they will hold the Katie McKerracher Trust Walk to Three Brethren (near near Selkirk Rugby & Football Clubs, Scotland, UK) on Saturday, 6th November.  Katie was just 10 years old when she was diagnosed on 28th February 2008 with a diffuse pontine glioma (DIPG), a brain tumour on her brain stem. Tragically, Katie passed away on 27th January, 2009.  The Walk is being held in her memory and mileage achieved from it will be donated to the Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours. Below is a very special photograph taken of Katie on the summit of the hill where the walk will be going so the route has great significance to supporters of the Trust. Walk participants will meet at 11:00am in Corbie Lynn carpark.  The walk will finish at about 2pm. For further information, see http://www.katiemckerrachertrust.co.uk/diffuse-pontine-glioma.html

Mary Belz of the Michael G Belz Foundation advises that they are asking people to wear gray on 1 November and in fact, to wear gray all during the Awareness Week. They have some comprehensive advice:
To help get your community and friends involved there is so much you can do!
1.  Forward this message to a friend, tweet it or post it on your facebook page.
2.  Educate yourself about brain tumors! Check our our website and/or the resources on our site to learn more.
3.  Wear a gray ribbon ….or distribute gray ribbons at work/school.
4.  Wear gray all week long… International Brain Tumor Awareness Week is October 31st – November 6th.
5.  Wear MGBF merchandise (you can purchase merchandise online @ our Cafe Press Shop).
6.  Learn about worldwide awareness events by checking out IBTA's site!
7.
Please email us (mgbf2009@yahoo.com) a photo of you wearing gray.
The newly formed Brain Tumour Barcelona group (BTB, Spain) has advised us that they will be holding a 5K awareness raising walk on Sunday, 14 November. Brain Tumour Barcelona includes children and adults with brain tumours. BTB has produced some solidarity bracelets with their organisation's name on them and all money raised at the walk and from the sale of the bracelets will be donated to Sant Joan de Deu Hospital in Barcelona specifically for brain tumour research. The mileage from the BTB 5K walk will be donated to the IBTA's Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours.

Notes: The intention of the founding meeting was that we seek to represent all tumours of the central nervous system. As is the practice in the scientific literature and clinical use, we use the words "brain tumour", not "brain cancer".
